Winner of Milan’s prestigious Pitti Uomo award in 2010, acclaimed Italian designer Fabio Quaranta has been making waves in the menswear world with his ground-breaking approach to design since his label’s debut in 2003.
Whilst placing particular emphasis on time-honoured craftsmanship and quality materials, this visionary creative eschews the established formalities of garment fabrication, producing an eclectic sartorial alchemy that blends tradition and innovation to seamless effect.
Born in Rome in 1977, Quaranta works from the Eternal City in a unique creative space; a hybrid studio, shop and art gallery dubbed “Motelsalieri” on the Via Giovanni Lanza. Drawing inspiration for his work from a variety of unexpected sources, he finds creative stimulation within the people and environment that surround him.
Sourcing fabrics for his garments from the 150-year-old Lanificio Bottoli mill in Italy’s Vittorio Veneto, a region renowned for its superior cloth manufacturing expertise, Quaranta’s designs incorporate beautifully engineered fabrics woven with an artful comprehension.
An all-Italian operation from design to production, this inspired label makes the most of home-grown talent and ushers in a fresh new era of Italian design.
The eagerly anticipated AW12 collection sports an array of beautifully deconstructed tailoring and relaxed-fitting separates. Some of the key standout features of the collection were button-less tailoring and trousers completely void of zips, that exude a quirky formal leisurewear feel, whilst updated Trilby-style hats added a nuance of old-school refinement.
A considered nod to the sports-luxe trend that’s been prevalent across designer collections for several seasons, this signature approach of maintaining an unsullied, clean-lined aesthetic, allows the wearer to focus on the beauty of the fabric and cut of the garment – creating an air of relaxed, yet refined sophistication.
Amongst the more directional looks from the collection were skilfully pleated full-length kilt skirts and graphic-print T-shirts worn over tailored wool jackets; perhaps not style tips that every man will rush to adopt, but the emphasis on experimentation and rule-breaking was quite evident in Quaranta’s work across the board.
