With environmental and global issues becoming a part of our daily lives and discourse, it often falls to large, international companies to defend their practices and account for the size of their carbon footprint. H&M has reacted to this with their ‘Conscious Collection’ for spring/summer 2012. The aim of the collection is to work towards sustainable fashion; whether through supporting local communities, or utilising ‘green’ fabrics to reduce their impact on the environment. A noble project for sure, and one that is often only seen in smaller, independent brands – H&M have boldly separated themselves from the competition on this one.In terms of the collection itself, there is more of a choice for the girls, but we still get a few things to choose from! There is light and fresh spring-friendly suiting, casual shirts and chinos, which sit alongside the staple polos and tees.
The look is very ‘Panama vacation’ and the models are styled with tan accessories and tortoiseshell sunglasses to accentuate the clothing. The grey chino and white blazer combination is perfect for easy spring/summer dressing and also very versatile.
Price-wise, there is no random increase in price that you sometimes find with collections like this – the suit jacket is £29.99 and the shirt is &pouns;7.99 for example. H&M have shown that they can provide more sustainable fashion at the same low price they are famous for, and they haven’t sacrificed the aesthetic either. I think they may be on to a winner here.
The collection is available online and in selected H&M stores, but check the H&M website for more details.
