GET TRENDY WITH THE NDAU COLLECTION.
Saturday, April 12, 2014The Ndau Collection which was set up in 1998 is a Zimbabwean design house specializing in the creation of unique African jewellery and exotic leather accessories. Gail van Jaarsveldt who is the founder of the brand runs it together with her daughter Christie Halsted who has a passion for design and perfection that has led to her excelling in every career move she has made.
Each of their sterling silver, bronze or copper beads and fittings are made using the centuries old African lost-wax casting technique, handmade from beginning to end, resulting in a beautifully soft, curvaceous finish to their metal work that gives it the feel of the ages of history it represents. They combine these cast pieces with their wide collection of beautiful rare antique African Trade beads, semi-precious and precious stones, natural horn and bone, exotic leathers and treasures they find in their travels, to create their one of a kind jewellery and accessories. Every piece takes several weeks to create and is hand worked throughout. Each of their pieces is either unique, a bespoke creation or part of a limited edition run of especially selected castings.
They believe
strongly in promoting local talent and work with well known local carvers
Justice Ncube and Fanwell Mucheneripi who are from Zimbabwe. They have set up and run The Ruoko
Project, whereby master wire-worker Gift Sitohle, scrimshander Moses Kalembela,
mosaic artist Obert Monga and fine pencil artist Leamington Muzhingi are
supported, mentored and promoted through the Ndau platform internationally,
collaborating with them in producing one of a kind jewellery and accessories, as
well as their own designs and artwork.
Gail van
Jaarsveldt had to say this on Zimbabwean design: “We have some of the best talents on the
Continent right here in Zimbabwe – we have what it takes to make it
internationally and it is great that we are beginning to get opportunities to
showcase these talents.”
Christie Halsted had to say this on inspiration: “I find my inspiration in the world around me – the
wildlife and natural shapes of the bush – as well as African culture. I’m Zimbabwean and proud to be so. There is a
strong influence on my work by local culture, as well as by the rest of
Africa.”
They are one jewellery brand that Africa has to be on a look out for.
